Today, Poland marks the 36th anniversary of the first partially free elections held on June 4, 1989 – a key moment in the country’s peaceful transition from communism to democracy.
These elections, held after negotiations between the government and the Solidarity movement, showed a clear public desire for change. Although not fully free (with some seats reserved for the ruling party), they led to a shift in power and inspired democratic movements across Central and Eastern Europe.
June the 4th is a reminder of the core values behind that transition:
Free speech
Fair elections
Civic participation
Human rights
These values are just as important today. Democracy isn’t something we achieve once and forget – it’s something we need to nurture every day through awareness, engagement, and action.
Even today, each of us contributes to shaping a better future – through everyday actions, choices, and conversations.
